On the Academy Award-winning epic romance ‘Titanic’, the world fondly remembers the chemistry of Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. But what most of us didn’t know was that both of their roles were almost played by other celebrities.

Yes, it’s true! Before James Cameron decided to cast the DiCaprio-Winslet pair, he almost gave it to some other actors. The much-loved shipwreck movie almost featured Matthew McConaughey as Jack Dawson and Gwyneth Paltrow as Rose De Witt Bukater.

James Cameron, who is known for his unconventional choices, said that he first considered Matthew McConaughey but then decided against him. When the role went to Leonardo DiCaprio, he was a little hesitant to take it up because it was a teenage character and he was already 22. But when he auditioned, he gave such a stellar performance that no one remembered his age.

The notorious Cameron then set his eyes on Gwyneth Paltrow, and both of them almost reached an agreement. But as luck would have it, she was eventually replaced with Kate Winslet who, just like Leonardo DiCaprio, stepped into her role effortlessly and made it memorable for us.

So, it’s time for us to thank the director for the heavenly chemistry of the DiCaprio-Winslet duo that gave us ‘Titanic’. We are glad that the ‘Titanic’ was released with them as its stars because no other couple could have brought so much romance as they did.

James Cameron Almost Didn’t Choose Leonardo DiCaprio or Kate Winslet To Star In ‘Titanic’

James Cameron’s class Titanic movie debuted in 1997 and was an instant classic. At the time no one could have predicted the immense success of this movie. But it’s also worth acknowledging that Cameron was very close to completely changing the stars of the production.

Who Almost Played Jack and Rose

When the movie was being cast, Cameron initially considered:

  • Matthew McConaughey as the lead character Jack.
  • Gwyneth Paltrow and Natalie Portman as the leading lady Rose.

Luckily, he met Leonardo DiCaprio, and decided he was the perfect fit for Jack. Unexpectedly though, Cameron had to convince DiCaprio to take on the role of Jack, because he had just finished filming William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet for two years portraying the same age character and he was over it.

After DiCaprio was cast, the logical choice for Rose would have been Gwyneth Paltrow, who was already a Hollywood sensation at that time. However, Cameron spotted Kate Winslet in a British show called Dark Season and knew she was perfect and cast her immediately.

The Success of the Film

The remarkable decision of Cameron to ditch the more popular actors and choose DiCaprio and Winslet was the right move, as they brought their characters to life perfectly!

The movie Titanic was a massive success, both critically and commercially. It won eleven Oscars and became the second highest-grossing film of all time behind Avatar. It put Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet’s careers in hyper-drive and today they remain two of the biggest Hollywood stars.

It goes to show that James Cameron’s decision to gamble on two relatively unknown names paid off!
